About Us
In 1889 T. Moody, a Pope County missionary, announced to the River Valley Association that a church had been started
in Dover. Mr. Moody was elected as pastor to a congregation of 11 members.
In November 1909, the trustees of the church purchased a lot. A building was erected on the site in 1910. That
same the church affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and was named The First Baptist Church of Dover.
In 1931 a parsonage was built from used materials and Reverend C.C. Martin became pastor. This occurred during
the Great Depression and though there was a lack of money, the church was never closed on Sunday.
Revered Tweed was called as pastor in 1954, followed by Reverend Milton Edmondson in 1957. Reverend Don Hankins
became the pastor at First Baptist Dover in 1959. Though Brother Hankins retired in 1986, the dedication and hard
work of he and his family continue to aid and bless the ministry of the church.
Improvements were made to the church building in 1962 and a parsonage was constructed in 1965. A new church building
was begun in 1974. Shortly after completion the building was severely damaged by lightning and had to be rebuilt.
A fellowship hall and additional classrooms were added in 1981.
In 1988 the Church called Reverend Jeff Paxton as pastor and he began his ministry on June 26. He and his family
continue their dedicated leadership and loving service to the Lord.
In 1993 phase one of a two-phase building program added approximately 6,000 square feet of educational space. The
second phase, a 500 seat sanctuary was finished in April 2001.
